In July 2011, the United Way of Miami-Dade/FamilyWize partnership officially saved the community $1 million on the cost of prescription medicines. In a bold move to continue this momentum, United Way of Miami-Dade and FamilyWize have committed, with all the participating pharmacies, to doubling these savings over the next 12 months.
The card is free of charge - there are no age restrictions, income restrictions or limit on how many times a single card may be used. It can be used by people who do not have health insurance or for medicines that are not covered by their insurance plan. On average, consumers receive a 30 percent discount of the cost of their prescription medicines. In June alone, the card was used 7,216 times with more than $104,000 in savings; a record high in Miami-Dade.
“We know that almost 30 percent of adults in South Florida don’t have health insurance, and many more are simply not getting the medicines they need, mainly due to high prices. So we are proud to be making a difference in people’s lives, allowing them to make health-conscious decisions,” Harve Mogul, president and CEO, United Way of Miami-Dade, said.
Locally, more than 400 pharmacies accept the prescription discount card, including: Walgreens, K-mart, COSTCO, Publix, Target, Wal-Mart and Winn Dixie, among others.
“Walgreens is proud to join United Way and FamilyWize to have a positive impact on the health of the community where we live and work,” Mario Hernandez, district pharmacy supervisor, Walgreens, said. “We recognize that making sure people can afford to buy the medicine they need, protects the individual, the family and even the community by preventing more serious and expensive complications and hospitalizations. Anyone can stop in to pick up a free FamilyWize card at their nearest Walgreens store in Miami-Dade.”
