Your trust matters to us. That’s why we work extra hard to ensure that we operate with the utmost efficiency and accountability. After all, improving people’s lives is serious business. Each year, United Way engages the services of a certified public accounting firm to audit our financial records as well as prepare our IRS Form 990, the annual tax return for non-profit organizations. Currently, the firm of Kaufman & Rossin, C.P.A. serve as our auditors. Audited financial statements and federal tax returns exclude some information, which is helpful to understanding the role of this United Way in the community. For example: Total economic impact The financial documents attached below only reflect revenues, distributions and expenditures for the most recent fiscal year ending June 30, 2007. However, in addition to raising and distributing dollars, United Way also recruits and places volunteers, attracts matching dollars for the money we distribute, generates in-kind gifts, advocates for effective public policy – all of which have a significant economic benefit to our community. This past year, we turned every community dollar into $2.10 worth of help for the community. Overhead Our overhead costs are 13%. This is based on United Way of America's new standards for reporting administrative and fundraising costs against the net revenue information presented in IRS Form 990.
We spend approximately 87% of United Way dollars on program activities, or community investments. According to the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance, spending at least 65% of total expenses on program activities is acceptable.
