    • United Way brings Food for the Poor and Goodwill Industries together to disseminate donated wheel chairs to hospitals and clinics in Haiti.  Goodwill will solicit donations from Goodwills around the country and will palletize them for shipment by Food for the Poor to Haiti.  Through their contacts in Haiti, including Project Medishare, the chairs will be disseminated to patients at hospitals and clinics in Haiti.
    • United Way staff member Cristian LaCapra travels to Haiti with Project Medishare team.

    • Harve Mogul, president and CEO, United Way of Miami-Dade, and David Landsberg, publisher, The Miami Herald, appear on Comcast Newsmakers to discuss role of Operation Helping Hands in response to Haiti.
    • United Way reconvenes members of “coordinating body” to formulate group’s role and mission, name and scope of work.
    • United Way brings Project Medishare and Food for the Poor together to establish partnership in Haiti to provide food and medical services to 1,500 children and single mothers who lost their homes and are now living in a refugee camp.

    • United Way Worldwide President Brian Gallagher meets Dr. Barth Green at Opa-Locka airport as part of the grant from Ralph Lauren Polo.  Hollywood actor Harrison Ford flies Green and medical supplies to Haiti on his private plane.

February 4, 2010

 

    • United Way works with United Way Worldwide to secure grant from Ralph Lauren Polo to support two UM Project Medishare 737 flights to Haiti, each carrying 140 doctors and medical personnel and 25,000 pounds of medical supplies.
    • United Way distributes free tickets to the Super Bowl Gospel concert to Haitian families. 
    •  United Way creates fundraising web portal for John Astengo for Haiti relief.
    • United Way participates in Donor’s Form teleconference regarding Haiti relief.

February 3, 2010

 

    • United Way, in partnership with Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce and Beacon Council, convenes community meeting with representatives from 40 different organizations and non-profits to discuss creating a coordinating body as it relates to local impacts.
    • Operation Helping Hands receives donation of 21,000 Duracell multistrobe flashlights from Proctor & Gamble Latin America for Haiti recovery efforts.

Week of January 18, 2010

 

    • United Way staff remains in contact with relief organizations, local non-profits, county government and federal agencies, assessing needs in Haiti as well as local impacts.
    • United Way continues to connect corporate partners including American Airlines, Ryder, UPS, FedEx, University of Miami and others with needs as identified.
    • United Way continues to receive donations through Operation Helping Hands and recruiting and placing volunteers at donations warehouse.
    • United Way continues to make referrals for assistance to individuals and families in Miami impacted by the Haiti earthquake.

January 18, 2010

 

    • Miami-Dade County opens warehouse for donations of in-kind goods.  United Way recruits volunteers to man the warehouse.  Warehouse to be opened through Feb. 19.  United Way to secure volunteers for duration of warehouse operation.

    • United Way releases first round of grants totaling $500,000 to four organizations on-the-ground in Haiti, providing relief and recovery.  They are:
        World Vision
        Project Medishare
        Food for the Poor
        Pan American Development Foundation
    • First round of grants are for food, water, tents, tarps, water purification tables, and medical supplies.

January 14, 2010

 

    • United Way staff reports to Miami-Dade County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) to assist in coordinating relief and recovery efforts for Haiti.
    • United Way creates Haiti Information Center on website to provide important resources, updated information and ways to help.
    • United Way works with United Way of North Central Massachusetts to secure emergency relief grant.

    • Haiti is hit by a 7.0 major earthquake.
    • United Way and The Miami Herald/el Nuevo Herald activate Operation Helping Hands, in partnership with Univision 23 and Univision radio.
