What’s at the heart of a healthy community? Healthy, self sufficient families. Active, independent older adults…

Within this impact area, we have two goals:

  • Older adults will be valued and live in dignity, with optimal health, independence and quality of life
  • Individuals and families will lead healthier, more independent lives

The need

Programs that improve lives
The programs we support for older adults offer congregate and home-delivered meals, nutritional services, social and educational activities, home-based care, case management, transportation, job skills training and placement. Meanwhile, healthcare programs offer immunizations, screenings, check-ups and nutrition advice. There are also programs that focus on children and families with mental health needs, therapy for emotionally disturbed children and victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse. Programs that cover substance abuse prevention, education and early intervention are available, as well as routine healthcare such as evaluation, diagnosis if necessary, training for parents and families, case management and care for those with disabilities.

How we’re helping
We all know that Medicaid is a crucial resource for many people in our community. Older adults and people with disabilities account for more than two-thirds of Florida’s Medicaid expenditures. Approximately 252,851 Miami-Dade residents have a disability. An estimated 400,000 people age 60 and above live in Miami-Dade. Of these, nearly 40,000 are age 85 and above, and 55,000 live below the poverty level. That’s why your United Way convened an informational forum for service providers and health industry professionals, policymakers, ad business leaders to discuss Governor Bush’s proposal for Medicaid reform. Agency directors have asked United Way of Miami-Dade to convene a follow-up forum on Medicaid reform and other health issues, such as mental health.

Meet Marion

At 78, Marion is among the 10 percent of homebound seniors living in our community. Her balance was so bad that she was afraid to leave the house on her own. Even to walk short distances, she needed a cane. Her family, like many other families caring for an older adult, struggled to meet her needs, given the many obligations their own situation presented – work, children.

About five years ago, she started attending The Funny Club and going to Tai Chi classes at one of United Way’s impact partner agencies. Before long, Marion was no longer lonely, having made many new friends. She grew much stronger and gave up her cane. In fact, in Tai Chi class today, Marion can balance quite well on one leg without any extra support.

It’s proven that good nutrition and proper exercise are key to older adults fighting disease and illness and maintaining their independence. Marion feels much stronger now than she did five years ago – and she’ll tell you it’s the care she received through these United Way funded programs that made the difference. Marion received the help she needed because you or someone like you gave to United Way.
