Program components deal with the causes of early sexual experimentation and teen pregnancy such as limited after school and weekend activities, poor self-esteem, no sense of belonging, poor values, negative peer association and lack of mentors.

Advisors coordinate events to help students explore careers and educational requirements, investigate colleges and their offerings, strengthen basic problem solving skills, complete online financial aid and college enrollment forms and apply for scholarships (including those offered each year by ASPIRA and its sponsors). This program has two main components: an eight-week training in pre-employability skills (resume writing, filling out an application, job search techniques, interviewing techniques and employer expectations) and a hands-on vocational program providing instruction in basic boat handling (power and sail) and basic marine maintenance. Upon completion of the pre-employability skills training, students will have developed their own personal resumes, will have had experience in interviewing, will have attended job fairs and will have met with employment agency staff. All students completing the three-part vocational instruction (sail, power, and maintenance) will receive certificates in those areas.

REACH for Success Group Mentoring is a teen pregnancy prevention program for upper-elementary and middle school youth. This 12-week program uses Wise Guys, a science-based pregnancy prevention curriculum recommended by the Urban League, and another curriculum called Teen Outreach. Both have been effective in decreasing teen pregnancy, school failure and school suspension. A critical component of Reach for Success is its collaboration with 100 Black Men and other male-rich volunteer partners who serve as role models for participants.
 
Incarcerated Youth Health Education Project (IYHEP)

This program provides HIV/AIDS education to incarcerated male and female youth (up to age 18) in detention facilities (Boot Camps and other juvenile facilities) throughout Miami-Dade County. Other at-risk youth who are either on probation or attending some alternative or after-school programs in the community can also attend. The objective of the program is to build risk reduction skills and encourage participants to seek testing, early care and treatment for HIV. Those who test positive for HIV are linked with appropriate medical care and case management services for the duration of their incarceration and as they transition back into the community upon release.

During each monthly 4-hour visit, mentors also eat lunch with their mentees, using this opportunity to discuss school issues, homework or current events. Sexual Minority Youth

Helps family members learn how to sign popular children’s books to deaf and hard-of-hearing children. A deaf tutor visits the family once a week and spends two hours teaching hearing parent(s) how to read (sign) a simple book to their deaf child. Tutors leave the family with a book and tape with instructions on how to sign; the parent(s) practice throughout the week reading to their child everyday. Often times incentives (such as toys) are given to the child in order to encourage literacy activities and to reward progress. Every week a new book with a different set of literacy activities is introduced. Program duration is approximately 20 weeks.

Suited for Success’ START (Smart Teens Are Responsible for Tomorrow) Now Youth Program addresses the needs of low-income youth in search of employment by guiding participants through the job search and interview process, preparing youth in employability skills, job readiness, interview skills and other topics that are key in leading to a successful job search. Professional apparel is provided to program participants on an as-needed basis. Classes take place on-site at local area high schools.

Students are referred by their school counselor or juvenile justice programs. Highly-trained youth counselors develop an individualized plan with each student and his/her family to improve the academic situation. Many students are then enrolled in remedial classes to ensure they pass the FCAT exam and in leadership development workshops to build character. The students participate in activities that lead them away from young pregnancy and STDs. Counselors make home visits to involve the family in delinquency prevention components. Students stay motivated by the opportunity to earn wages during summer jobs where their academic skills are reinforced; they also learn vocational skills and the skills they need to get a good job and retain it.

Presents opportunities for children to explore interests such as computer skills, arts and crafts, sports (basketball, football, tennis), cooking, rocketry, science, water safety and swimming lessons. Children select daily activities and participate in field trips to Oleta State Park, water parks, horseback riding, etc. The camp hosts special events such as puppet shows, music groups, and magicians. A group of children from CHARLEE and Family Resource Center participate in reading readiness programs to improve their academic performance.
 
Summer Program

This is an eight-week camp program that provides safe and structured activities at five of Boys and Girls Clubs' locations in Miami-Dade for the months of June and July. Youth are separated by age group; each group is supervised by three adult counselors. Activities include arts and crafts, computers, games, basketball, movies, organized group athletics such as T-ball and kickball, and a talent show at the end of the summer. Field trips are offered to Miami Ice Arena, bowling lanes, Dandy Bear, and other kid-friendly Miami destinations. Weekly awards are given in each group to recognize the boys and girls who have made a positive contribution to the Summer Program.
 
Summer Youth Employment Program

Provides 100 disadvantaged youth who reside in high-risk neighborhoods and who meet specific low income guidelines with a meaningful, paid work experience during summer months. Eligible youth receive employability skills training (i.e. filling out job applications) prior to on-site work experience at various worksites. From week two, going forward, youth learn valuable work maturity skills such as good attendance and punctuality, while they are on the job. Each participant is assigned to a worksite and trains under a supervisor. Youth gain hands-on work experience in a positive, crime-free environment.
 
Support Groups Program
Epilepsy Foundation of South Florida Contact Info
Weekly meetings for teens with epilepsy provide opportunities for positive social interaction. Helps epileptic teens cope with the emotional stresses, social stigmas, school and family strains that result from having the disorder. Teens and their families benefit from counseling and epilepsy education from psychologists. Youth attend the Boggy Creek Camp, devoted exclusively to children with epilepsy, for one week each summer. Teens participate in P.E.E.R. - L.I.N.E. (Promoting Empowering Encounters Related to Lessons in Epilepsy) – a component that pairs teens with and without epilepsy. Teens learn that they share many of the same issues, challenges and risks – regardless of their medical history. Non-epileptic participants receive community service credit.

Lessons and activities include: basic life skill preparation, substance abuse education, nutrition education, physical fitness activies, tutoring, reading and creative writing skills, role playing, recreation, community and multicultural projects, computer education, leadership skills and promoting family involvement. Then, they are assigned to activities that improve their academic standing and help them pass the FCAT. Students can take advantage of the latest academic software, study in small groups or receive one-on-one assistance from Florida-certified teachers. Many attend early-bird sessions an hour before school starts and/or after-school tutoring sessions. Students also participate in leadership development workshops where they learn positive study habits and how to work in teams. Field trips and educational games keep students motivated and provide additional real-life learning experiences. Most students are exposed to nutrition information and physical fitness activities at least once a week to encourage them to live healthy, balanced lifestyles.

Clients are at risk of losing their children to state custody due to charges of neglect or abuse. CAPP intervenes at the onset of a potential problem. If abuse has already occurred, staff takes measures to prevent its recurrence. If abuse has not been documented, but is suspected, staff applies appropriate prevention measures.

Functional Family Therapy

This is a short-term intervention program in which therapists see the family for an average of 12-14 weeks, once a week. Treatment typically lasts three to four months and involves all family members. Benefits include decreased family conflict, improved communication and problem-solving skills, and increased contact with required community resources.
