Within this impact area, we have one goal:

  • Individuals are inspired to make a difference in their community

Programs that improve lives
Encouraging neighborhood and civic involvement programs connect individuals, families and groups to evening and weekend volunteer opportunities, create tools for people to make their voices heard on important public policy issues, offer training to help people serve on nonprofit boards and present opportunities to give following a disaster.

How we’re helping
Getting people involved in their community – whether through volunteering their time or exercising their voice – is the best way to effect change. This spring, we rallied the troops around key legislative issues, including Florida KidCare – a program that provides uninsured children in low-income families with healthcare. During the ’05 legislative session, state lawmakers approved a year-round enrollment policy. Now, instead of waiting for a once-a-year window to apply for their children’s care, parents can get their kids one step closer to quality care much sooner, thus helping to secure their family’s health and well-being.

Meet Beverly

Far too many hard-working families are barely getting by. Almost 20% of our residents live below the federal poverty line. For a family of four in Miami-Dade, that’s $19,350.

Beverly is one person who is trying to help these families improve their financial situation. Beverly is the Dade and Broward community development manager in the banking industry.

For the past two years, Beverly has volunteered to help low-wage earners collect the earned income tax credits (EITC) they deserve – up to $4,400 in some cases. The past year, she, along with another 106 volunteers, prepared tax returns for 2,400 low income workers for free. Had those individuals had to pay for these services it would have cost a total of $180,000. Better yet, the free tax help resulted in $1.5 million in EITC to these individuals and families.

For the last three years, United Way has worked with the Prosperity Campaign to help more and more people access tax benefits such as EITC.

If Beverly were here today, she’d tell you how good she feels that she was able to use her skills to make a difference in other people’s lives.

United Way of Miami-Dade, through our partnership with Hands On Miami, connects individuals, families and groups to evening and weekend volunteer opportunities year-round. Each year, volunteers in our community devote nearly 60,000 hours to community service each year.
