United Way of Miami-Dade and The Miami Herald/el Nuevo Herald have extended Operation Helping Hands to help the people of Chile following Saturday’s 8.8-magnitude earthquake. Operation Helping Hands was activated in January to collect donations in response to the catastrophic earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12.
100% of funds raised through Operation Helping Hands will be used to purchase relief items needed in Chile, as in Haiti, during this time of crisis. Monetary donations made to Operation Helping Hands will go directly to help the people of both countries through non-profit organizations working on the ground. The funds will be designated to help the relief effort of your choice.

Operation Helping Hands, a partnership between The Miami Herald/el Nuevo Herald and United Way of Miami-Dade, was established to provide South Florida residents with a way to reach out and help their neighbors in need following a disaster or humanitarian crisis. One hundred percent of all contributions to Operation Helping Hands go to help people in the communities most severely impacted, with no administrative costs taken by United Way.
Operation Helping Hands was created in 1998 in the aftermath of devastating hurricanes Mitch and Georges, and has been reactivated several times since to help Floridians extend a helping hand to help those involved in emergency situations.
