Simply pledge to prepare and share the information with friends and neighbors

United Way of Miami-Dade today launched Operation Prepare and Share, a viral awareness campaign that urges members of the community to take the pledge of getting prepared for hurricane season, and share the information with loved ones.  Time and time again, United Way has led the way in providing the community with resources to help recover from disasters.  Now, the organization is looking ahead and creating a movement to mitigate the effects of unforeseen severe storms before they happen.

According to a 2010 Mason-Dixon poll, one in three Florida residents don’t have a hurricane survival kit or a family disaster plan.   The poll also found that 17 percent mistakenly think the government will provide food, water, medicine and shelter immediately after a storm.

“In South Florida, history teaches us that we’re going to experience hurricanes, and if you’ve seen the devastation after a hurricane, as I have, I guarantee you will be motivated to create a hurricane plan,” Harve A. Mogul, president and CEO, United Way of Miami-Dade, said.  “That is all we’re asking the community to do – pledge to be ready and ask your loved ones to do the same.”

The goal of Operation Prepare and Share is to collect pledges from as many Miami-Dade residents as possible who promise to prepare their homes and businesses for severe weather, and then spread the word to their neighbors to do the same.  Once they take the pledge, they’ll have a wealth of vital information at their fingertips that can help them prepare for the hurricane season, including links to The Miami Herald Hurricane Guide, American Red Cross, Miami-Dade Division of Emergency Management, and much more.

Participants will also have the opportunity to easily pass along the information to their family members, friends, colleagues and neighbors by forwarding an ecard via email or sharing a link on Facebook.
